Old Friend

By James Wada

A detailed, surrealist stipple and cross-hatch ink drawing in black ink on a cream-colored background. The composition features a complex, dreamlike landscape blending maritime elements with abstract geometry. On the left side, the hulls of two wooden ships or canoes appear to emerge from or dissolve into a heavily shaded thicket of branches and cross-hatched shadows. Behind the ships sits a large, smooth, perfectly spherical object that dominates the upper-left quadrant. The ground in the foreground is a textured, rocky shore depicted with dense stippling. Fine, horizontal ink lines stretch across the right side of the drawing, suggesting a calm sea or a hazy horizon line under a vast, empty sky.
Medium: Pen on paper
Dimensions: 24″ x 36″

Quote / Inspiration:

A pure heart is as a mirror, cleanse it with the burnish of love and severance from all save God, that the true sun may shine therein and the eternal morning dawn.
